Catherine's Annual Yuletide Carol Concert Spotlights Community Volunteers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her yearly Christmas carol concert at the historic Abbey, with guests including royals, celebrities and local heroes who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The 1,600 guests will listen to a mix of carols, music and readings from performers including award-winning actors.

A Theme of Love and Generosity

The theme of the concert, held in the candle-lit Abbey on the afternoon, is kindness and showing love to others.

In the audience are Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose child passed away from a brain tumour, and who set up a charity, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a child with a terminal illness.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an profound impact to the well-being of people," the Princess expressed in a letter ahead of the carol service.

A Gradual Return

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own steady comeback to public life after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, last month delivering her major oration since 2023, in which she discussed recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".

Performance and Potential

Attendees entering the Abbey will be entertained by budding artists aided by the Future Talent charity, set up with the help of the Duchess of Kent to increase availability of music lessons.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who plays the trumpet and is from Wales, has been supported by the organisation, with grants helping towards musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "incredible" to be playing at tonight's service.

"Pursuing music is often costly," Carys said. She is now studying at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to cultivate their performance abilities.

A Family Affair

Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who plays the euphonium, will be present at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Among the guests will be people from various age groups.

That will include Saphia Turner, aged nine, winner of a prize for youthful altruism, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to collect donations for food banks.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been adorned with custom-created holiday decorations, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

Taking to the stage will be Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a Cornish sea shanty group, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the icing on the cake for us."

This annual carol service will be televised and shown on ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
