France will start stopping small boats in Channel following UK pressure
France has agreed to start stopping small boats in the Channel, after months of insistence from the UK.
The change in policy comes after the British leader sent a letter to the French leader asking him to back the plan and stating there currently "have no effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police have been authorized to stop the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their passengers, according to authoritative statements.
French authorities have infrequently intervened to stop the heavily loaded boats departing from the shoreline because it is viewed as too great a danger to both officers and civilians.
"It is essential that we implement these tactics this month... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel."
Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson states personnel will start taking action at sea, with the objective of safeguarding human life.
Significantly, the spokesperson excluded the use of nets to intercept boats, which had previously been reported as a potential method to disable the propellers of the boats.
This determination to take action at all is a significant advancement, coming after a short-lived change towards a more aggressive approach this summer, which dropped off when the previous government official departed from government.
That was highlighted in July, preceding a meeting between the Prime Minister and President, when French police were observed wading into the sea to slash the hulls of a boat.
Currently French officials will once more be permitted to stop boats prior to they pick up migrant individuals from the beaches of northern France, although it's not clear how the vessels will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are currently delaying the start of interceptions and the people-smuggling gangs will be looking for methods to adapt to evade interception, as they have frequently done in the past.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for comment.
