The Creators of Baldur's Gate 3 Clarifies Its Use of Generative AI for New Divinity Game
The studio behind acclaimed RPGs like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin recently teased its upcoming project, sparking a wave of hype within the gaming community. However, recent remarks from the company's lead designer have introduced a new dimension to the discussion, addressing the developer's philosophy toward machine learning.
A Tool for Ideation, Not Replacement
In a latest clarification, the studio's founder explained that the team is utilizing generative AI for specific preliminary functions. These involve enhancing PowerPoint slides, generating initial concept art, and creating draft text.
Notably, Vincke stressed that the final content in the game will be crafted entirely by human artists. "Larian is developing everything ourselves," he stated.
Larian is constantly growing our team of writers and are actively assembling writing teams.
Since concept art is being specifically referenced — we right now have twenty-three artistic staff and have positions available for additional artists.
All our efforts we do is supplementary and focused on having people spend more time on making content.
Any machine learning application implemented properly is a boost to a developer's process, not a substitute for their skill.
Responding to Feedback and Defining the Path
The revelation of AI usage originally provoked concern among some the community. In reaction, Vincke issued further clarification on public forums.
"At Larian, we employ these tools to gather inspiration, in the same way we use Google and physical media," he stated. "In the conceptual planning process we use it as a simple sketch for structure which we then replace with original illustrations."
He added, "Larian brings on creatives for their creative vision, not for their ability to follow what a machine suggests."
Key Areas of AI Integration
Vincke had previously broken down the team's focused strategy to machine learning, grouping its use into key pillars:
- Handling Monotonous Jobs: Areas like motion capture cleaning, dialogue cleanup, and Larian-specific work like retargeting animations.
- Fast-Tracked Experimentation: Using technology to speedily create simple models of gameplay ideas to test concepts ahead of complete production.
- Future Potential for Gameplay: Exploring how AI could in the future facilitate emergent reactivity, particularly in simulating unforeseen permutations in a vast role-playing world.
He explicitly affirmed that key artistic disciplines — such as visual art — are not fields where the company is replacing artistic input. In fact, Larian is actively hiring in these precise roles.
"Larian is neither launching a game with AI-generated content, and we are certainly not considering trimming down creatives to swap them out with artificial intelligence," Vincke stated definitively.
