The English Team to Start Euro 2028 Journey at City’s Home Ground
The English squad will commence their Euro 2028 adventure at the Etihad Stadium, provided that they achieve the anticipated qualification for a tournament hosted across the majority of the UK and the Irish Republic.
City’s stadium has not staged an England men’s game since May 2016, when Turkey were overcome 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is expected to stage the England side for their first match on a Saturday in June 2028.
The team are set to play their concluding group fixtures at the national stadium, but, should they win their group, their knockout stage opener would occur at the Newcastle stadium. Placing second would mean starting the playoffs at Everton’s ground.
Championship Launch and Rally
The championship was unveiled at an ceremony in a London landmark on Wednesday night. High-ranking officials from Uefa and the organizing bodies were heckled as they arrived the site by approximately 50 activists, who called for the Israeli team to be removed from international football because of the situation in Gaza.
Banners were held up with phrases stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters shouted: “Kick Israel out.”
Championship Fixture List
The first match of Euro 2028 will be staged at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, on Friday 9 June, a game that will involve the Welsh team if they qualify.
Wembley Stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the final, which will be played on July 9, 2028 with a kick-off time at late afternoon.
It is expected that an earlier start, which will also be used for Champions League finals from the following campaign, will cater to family audiences and help reach a wider spectrum of audiences.
Participating Countries
The Ireland are scheduled to play their first game at the Dublin Arena and Scotland would follow suit at Hampden Park.
Each host nation’s squad will participate in the preliminary stage; two guaranteed slots will be reserved for any that fail to qualify for the finals through that route.
Stadiums and Elimination Phase
Villa Park and The North London arena complete the event’s nine venues. Each one will hold at least one elimination game, with the quarter-finals held at each country’s national stadium.
The qualifying draw will be conducted in Belfast, which was removed as a venue city last year when it emerged the Belfast stadium could not be renovated in time, on December 6, 2026.
Official Statement
“This will be a competition for the supporters and a showcase of everything we value about the game – its emotion and capacity to unite individuals.”
In excess of three million admissions, a all-time high for a Euro tournament, are projected to be released to attendees.
