The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network launched a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. At a time often characterized by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who found the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about following this lovable family go about their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to help comedy break out of its current layer of irony. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well help usher in that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to enjoy the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
