The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Track
This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for characters including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears amazing. However, I felt that something was lost in the song choice.
The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song created by artist the talented musician. This piece from the official score of the same name, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it only got better when cast member the performer wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, the creators has already said that the animated show will have some surprises and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening appears as one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of the second series, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
