The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named 6-7 Spared by Miami Dade County Leader.
While perhaps not at the identical stature as pardoning festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued since the commencement of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” she went on. “May this pig enjoy a prosperous future without fear.”
This ceremony, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The pig, provided by a first responder, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “6-7” – deriving from a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The trend became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently declared “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to open the festive period,” said the event host, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It embodies the essence of Miami: vibrant, varied, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Annually, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
